‘Tough call’: Star Sydney to close popular nightclub

The Star Sydney will close popular nightclub Marquee later this year, after a decade in business, as it seeks to rebuild trust with shareholders.

Recently appointed CEO Scott Wharton said there had been difficulties in operating the venue as a nightclub and it was time for the venue to take a new direction.

“Incidents and issues have occasionally surfaced and that creates additional pressure to meet the standards we expect of ourselves,” he said.

“It’s a tough decision to make, but if we are to regain the trust of all of our stakeholders, we need to assess and react accordingly to how we run our operations.”

Wharton said the company has a strong relationship with the owners of the Marquee brand and plans to work with them on other opportunities in the future.

“They’re a great partner, and we’ll be discussing doing more with them in the high-end hospitality space,” he said.

“In this case, it’s about looking at other dining options that will further enhance the Star Sydney as a world-class tourist and entertainment destination.”

Wharton said the redeployment of any affected personnel will be a top priority.
